Council regulations vary by location. In many areas, cabins under 10m² may not require approval, but we always recommend checking with your local council to ensure compliance before purchasing.
Owner Builder Rules / Council Regulations.
We supply the timber cabin kit only. We are not able to provide the necessary forms to assist with a council application to have our cabins approved as a Class 1a habitable dwelling.
However, getting council approval maybe easier than you may think. The best way to achieve this is by applying for an ‘Owner Builders’ licence. Assembling a ‘My Cozy Cabin’ timber cabin is relatively easy, and you can save a lot of money by building one of our cabins as a DIY managed project.
If your cabin requires council approval, our best recommendation is to become an owner builder. You will need an owner builders’ licence and a white card. These are accessible by doing an online course. The length of the course can vary, but it generally takes a few hours to complete, depending on the provider and your pace of learning.
Basically, an owner builder who does not have many building skills can manage the project by outsourcing the cabin build to a local builder. You then manage the site to ensure it is built as required. You can save yourself a lot of money by doing parts of the building process yourself and outsource the rest to qualified trades.
All cabins come with plans, and comprehensive instructions.

To keep your cabin in great condition:
Apply a quality exterior timber sealant every few years.
Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
Clean and maintain the roofing and windows periodically.

Depending on where your property is we may be able to recommend an experienced My Cozy Cabins’ builder, however given the simplicity of building our cabins, we generally suggest you seek an experienced handyman or local tradesman that can offer an hourly or fixed rate. Our cabins only take from 2-5 days to complete.
